Katherine McKeown Roush was born in Tucson, Arizona, on June 19, 1946, the daughter of Joseph and Virginia (Conrey) Roush. She was raised in the San Francisco area and studied French at Stanford University on a General Electric Co. scholarship. She studied calligraphy at Reed College.
